CIBIL & Credit Score Repair

A low CIBIL score isn't a life sentence. Honest guidance on improving your credit score, fixing settled and written-off tags, and disputing errors.

A low CIBIL score follows you everywhere. It isn't a verdict on who you are.

Loan applications. Credit cards. Sometimes even a rental agreement. A three-digit number starts making decisions about your life, and somewhere along the way it stops feeling like data and starts feeling like a judgment on your character.

It isn't. Your CIBIL score is a summary of how borrowed money was handled during one stretch of your life — nothing more. It records a period. And a period can change.

Most people carrying a low score were never told two things: what actually pulled it down, and what genuinely lifts it back up. Real credit score repair isn't a trick or a paid shortcut — it's understanding both. Here they are.

Most people carrying a low score were never told two things: what actually pulled it down, and what genuinely lifts it back up. Real credit score repair isn't a trick or a paid shortcut — it's understanding both. Here they are.

The one distinction almost nobody explains: "settled" is not "closed"

This single misunderstanding costs people years.

When you can't repay in full and the lender agrees to accept less, the account is marked "Settled." It feels like relief — the pressure stops. But to every future lender, "Settled" is a red flag: it means you didn't repay in full. It can drop your score by 75–100 points and stays on your report for up to 7 years.

"Closed" is different. It means you paid everything you owed and the account was shut properly. That's the status you want.

Here's the part nobody tells you: if you settled, you can still change "Settled" to "Closed" — by later paying the waived amount, getting a No Dues Certificate (NOC) from the lender, and having them update the bureau. That one change can reopen doors that were quietly shut.

An honest warning: genuine "Settled" or "Written Off" tags cannot be disputed away. They reflect real history. Any agency promising to "erase" an accurate negative record is selling you something that doesn't exist — and burning your dispute window in the process. Disputes are for errors, not for facts you wish were different.

Three real problems, and what actually happens

Problem 1 — "My score dropped 80 points and I don't know why."
A single payment 30 days late can cost 60–110 points overnight, and the mark stays on your report for 36 months. Often the person doesn't even remember the missed payment — an auto-debit that bounced, a card they'd stopped using. The fix isn't dramatic: clear any overdue amount immediately (even ₹500 left pending keeps damaging the score), then let clean months accumulate.

Problem 2 — "I paid off my loan months ago but my credit report still shows it active."
Extremely common — around 15% of Indian credit reports carry at least one error. Lenders report to CIBIL monthly, so changes take 30–45 days to reflect. If it's been longer, this is a genuine reporting error you can fix with a CIBIL dispute on the official portal, using your closure proof — resolved within 30 days by RBI mandate. This is the fastest kind of repair there is.

Problem 3 — "I settled a credit card during a hard time. Now every loan gets rejected."
The settled tag is doing exactly what it's designed to do — signalling risk. The path out has two parts: repay the previously waived amount to convert "Settled" to "Closed," and in parallel, rebuild around it with a secured credit card and low utilisation. Within 12–18 months of clean behaviour, approvals typically return, first at smaller amounts and higher rates, then improving.

What actually moves your score (and what doesn't)

Your credit score is built from five factors, but two do most of the work:

  • Payment history (~35%) — paying on time is the single biggest lever. One missed EMI undoes months of progress.

  • Credit utilisation (~30%) — how much of your limit you use. On a ₹1,00,000 limit, regularly spending ₹85,000 drags your score down even if you pay in full every month. Keep it under 30%. Below 15% if you're actively rebuilding.

The rest: credit age (~15%), credit mix (~10%), and new enquiries (~10%). Which is why closing your oldest card or applying to five lenders at once quietly hurts you.

How long it really takes

There is no honest way to improve your CIBIL score in 30 days flat, and anyone selling one is lying. Realistic timelines:

  • Reducing utilisation: shows in 30–60 days (the fastest genuine win)

  • Disputing an error: 30 days once filed

  • From 600 to 700: roughly 6–9 months of clean behaviour

  • From 700 to 750: another 6–12 months

  • A settled/written-off mark: its weight fades over time, though the tag itself stays up to 7 years

A 2026 update worth knowing: lenders now report more frequently than the old monthly cycle — twice-monthly since 2025, and some large banks weekly. Positive actions at your primary salary-account bank often show up faster now. Time an improvement push there before a loan application.

How this works

First, your report. Read line by line — not the score at the top, but each account: what's overdue, what's misreported, what's genuinely negative, and what's a fixable error. Ten honest minutes here decides everything that follows.

Then, which bucket you're in. Reporting errors get disputed. Genuine negative history gets rebuilt around. These are completely different paths, and most people waste months on the wrong one.

Then, the plan. Genuine credit score repair is a sequence, not a single move — what to clear first, what to dispute, what to open, what to leave alone — built for your situation and set against fifteen-plus years of knowing what lenders actually respond to.

You pay nothing. The work is funded by lending partners, never by the person sitting across the table.

Questions people actually ask

What CIBIL score is needed for a personal loan?
Most lenders look for 750 or above out of 900 for the best terms. Between 650 and 750, approval is possible but rates tighten. Below 600 usually means rejection from traditional banks, though several NBFCs work with lower scores at higher rates.

How can I improve my CIBIL score fast in India?
To improve your CIBIL score, the two fastest genuine levers are: reduce your credit utilisation below 30% (visible in 30–60 days) and clear any overdue amount, however small. Then dispute any reporting errors. Anyone promising a jump in a week is selling a fantasy.

How long does it take to improve a CIBIL score?
There's no fixed monthly increase. Utilisation improvements show in 30–60 days. Moving from 600 to 700 typically takes 6–9 months of clean behaviour; 700 to 750 another 6–12 months. Scores accumulate — they don't jump.

What's the difference between "settled" and "closed"?
"Closed" means you repaid everything and the account shut properly — the good status. "Settled" means the lender accepted less than the full amount — a risk signal that stays up to 7 years and drops your score 75–100 points. They look similar to you and completely different to a lender.

How do I remove a "settled" status from my CIBIL report?
Only one legitimate way: repay the amount that was waived, get a No Dues Certificate from the lender, and have them report the account as "Closed" to the bureau. If they delay, raise a dispute on the CIBIL portal with the NOC as proof.

Can I remove a "written off" status?
If it's genuine, you can't dispute it away — but you can resolve it. Repay the outstanding, obtain the NOC, and have the lender update the status. Over time, and with clean behaviour built around it, its weight on your score fades even though the record remains for up to 7 years.

What does "written off" actually mean?
It means the lender gave up trying to recover the amount and marked it as a loss. It's more damaging than "settled" and signals to future lenders that a past debt went unpaid. It stays on your report for up to 7 years.

Can I get a loan with a low CIBIL score?
Yes — a low CIBIL score doesn't automatically disqualify you, but approval isn't guaranteed and it costs more. NBFCs and fintech lenders are generally more flexible than banks. A co-applicant with a strong score, or a secured loan against an FD or property, substantially improves your odds while you rebuild.

Does checking my own CIBIL score reduce it?
No. Checking your own score is a "soft enquiry" with zero effect. Only a lender's "hard enquiry" when you apply for credit has an impact. You're entitled to one free full report a year — check it before you apply anywhere, not after.

How do I correct an error on my CIBIL report?
File a CIBIL dispute on the official website with supporting proof. CIBIL verifies with the lender and, if confirmed, updates the report — resolved within 30 days by RBI mandate. Around 15% of reports carry at least one error, so this is worth checking before anything else.

How much does credit utilisation affect my score?
Around 30% of your score — second only to payment history. High utilisation signals over-reliance on credit. Keep it under 30%; below 15% if you're rebuilding. Before a big loan application, dropping it to 5–10% for three months can measurably improve the rate you're offered.

Will paying off my loan improve my score immediately?
Not immediately. Lenders report to CIBIL periodically, so the change takes 30–45 days to reflect. A "Closed" status recovers your score meaningfully within 30–90 days. If it hasn't updated after 45 days, raise a dispute.

How long do missed payments stay on my report?
A single late payment mark typically stays for 36 months. It doesn't stop your score recovering — consistent on-time payments afterward steadily outweigh it — but the record itself remains visible for that period.

Should I close my old credit cards?
Usually not. Your oldest card lengthens your credit history (~15% of your score), and closing it also reduces your total available limit, which pushes your utilisation ratio up. Keeping an old, lightly-used card open generally helps more than closing it.

Does applying to many lenders hurt my score?
Yes. Each application is a hard enquiry, and a cluster in a short window reads as distress and lowers your score. Research first, then apply to one or two places — never "try everywhere."

How can I rebuild credit from a very low score or no history?
A secured credit card against a fixed deposit (often ₹15,000–₹25,000) is the standard entry point — you get a card, use it lightly, pay in full, and build a positive record. Several banks offer these with no income proof required.

Can a "CIBIL fixing agency" remove my negative record for a fee?
No. Any agency claiming to erase accurate negative records is a scam — genuine settled, written-off, or default tags cannot be disputed away because they aren't errors. Legitimate repair is either correcting real errors (free, on the CIBIL portal) or rebuilding over time. Never pay for the impossible.

I have a decent CIBIL score but still got rejected. Why?
Your score is only part of a lender's decision. They also check FOIR — how much of your income already goes to existing EMIs — plus income stability and recent enquiries. A good score with heavy existing debt still gets declined. If your score is fine but you're being rejected, the problem is usually somewhere other than the score, and it's worth finding out exactly where before applying again.

Does loan settlement affect my ability to borrow later?
Yes, for a while. A "settled" status signals partial repayment and often leads to rejections in the years after. Converting it to "closed" and rebuilding around it restores borrowing ability over 12–18 months of clean behaviour.

How often should I check my CIBIL report?
At least twice a year — more often if you're actively rebuilding or preparing for a major loan. It's the only way to catch reporting errors early, and checking your own report never affects your score.
