Personal Loan & Business Loan Guidance India

Rejected for a Personal loan or Business loan and never told why? Honest guidance on Eligibility, MSME funding.
What lenders actually look for. No cost to you.

You applied. You waited. And nobody told you why.

The message came back: rejected. No reason. No explanation. Just a decision made somewhere you couldn't see, about a life you're living every day.

Most people walk away from that moment quietly concluding the problem is them. Not enough income. Not good enough with money. Not worth lending to.

It's almost never true. In fifteen-plus years arranging loans through Atlanta Group, the reason is nearly always something specific, mechanical, and fixable — and something nobody ever bothered to explain.

How this works

First, your Profile. Income, income sources, past credit history, existing loans and obligations — a complete picture of what a lender actually sees when they look at your file.

Then, your history of Applications. Which banks or NBFCs you've already approached, and what happened. This step matters more than most people realise. A rejection can mean the application had a genuine problem — or simply that it went to the wrong lender for your profile. Those are two completely different situations, and they need two completely different solutions.

Then the Solution. Based on what the information actually shows and fifteen-plus years of knowing which lender fits which profile — not a scattergun application to whoever's advertising.

You pay nothing. The work is funded by lending partners, never by the person sitting across the table.

Questions people actually ask

Why was my personal loan rejected?

Rarely for one reason alone. The most common causes: a credit score below the lender's threshold, income that can't be verified in the format they need, existing EMIs consuming too much of your monthly income (FOIR), errors on your credit report, too many recent loan enquiries, or documents that don't match across sources. Each of these is fixable once you know which one applied to you — which is exactly what the rejection letter never tells you.

I have a good CIBIL score. Why was I still rejected?

Because the score is only part of the decision. Lenders also assess FOIR — your Fixed Obligation to Income Ratio. If your existing EMIs already consume too much of your monthly income, even a 780 score gets declined. This is the single most common source of confusion among people who've done everything right. Reducing existing obligations often matters more than pushing your score higher.

What CIBIL score do I need for a personal loan?

Most lenders look for 750 or above out of 900 for the best terms and rates. Above 750 generally means smoother approval. Between 650 and 750, approval is possible but terms tighten. Below 600 typically means rejection from traditional banks — though several NBFCs work with lower scores under different conditions.

How much personal loan can I get on my salary?

Most lenders work on a multiple of your monthly income, adjusted for existing obligations. A common rule of thumb is 10 to 24 times monthly salary, but the real constraint is usually FOIR — total EMIs including the new one generally shouldn't exceed 50 to 60% of net monthly income. Someone earning ₹60,000 with no existing EMIs can borrow considerably more than someone earning ₹60,000 with ₹25,000 already going out.

What is the minimum salary required for a personal loan in India?

Typically ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month for salaried applicants, depending on the lender and city. Metro-based applicants often face slightly higher thresholds because of assumed living costs. Some NBFCs work with lower income levels at higher rates.

What documents are required for a personal loan?

Identity proof (PAN, Aadhaar), address proof, income proof (typically three months of salary slips and six months of bank statements for salaried applicants; ITR and financials for self-employed), and employment proof. The most common cause of delay isn't missing documents — it's mismatched details across them, like an address that differs between Aadhaar and bank records.

Can I get a personal loan without income proof?

Difficult but not always impossible. Options include applying with a co-applicant who has documented income, offering security, or approaching NBFCs that assess banking transaction history rather than formal salary slips. Expect higher interest rates. Be cautious of anyone promising an unsecured loan with no income assessment at all.

Can self-employed people get a personal loan in India?

Yes. The assessment differs — lenders look at ITR filings (usually two to three years), business vintage, banking turnover, and business stability rather than salary slips. Self-employed applicants with consistent filings and clean banking often get approved comfortably; the difficulty is usually documentation rather than eligibility.

Can I apply again immediately after a rejection?

You can, but it typically makes things worse. Every application triggers a hard enquiry on your credit report, and several in quick succession signal distress to the next lender — and can pull your score down further. The better sequence: find out what actually caused the rejection, fix that, then apply once, to the right lender.

Does applying to multiple banks lower my credit score?

Yes, when done simultaneously. Each application creates a hard enquiry. A cluster of enquiries in a short window is visible to every lender who looks afterwards, and reads as desperation. This is one of the most common and most avoidable forms of self-inflicted damage.

What is FOIR and how does it affect my loan approval?

FOIR — Fixed Obligation to Income Ratio — measures what proportion of your monthly income already goes to fixed commitments: existing EMIs, credit card minimums, and similar. Most lenders want total obligations, including the new loan's EMI, to stay under roughly 50 to 60% of net monthly income. FOIR is the reason high earners with heavy existing debt get rejected while modest earners with clean books get approved.

How do I get a business loan in India?

Lenders assess business vintage (typically two to three years of operations minimum), annual turnover, profitability, GST filings, banking transactions, and the promoter's personal credit score. A business loan application is really two assessments running together — the business and the person behind it. Weakness in either can sink an otherwise strong file.

Can I get an MSME loan without collateral?

Yes. The CGTMSE scheme (Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises) exists specifically to enable collateral-free lending by providing guarantee cover to the lender. Many banks and NBFCs offer unsecured MSME loans under it. Approval still depends on business performance and credit history, but the absence of property to pledge is not automatically disqualifying.

What documents are required for an MSME loan?

Business registration proof (Udyam registration, GST certificate), the last two to three years of ITR and audited financials, six to twelve months of business bank statements, KYC for all promoters, and business address proof. Udyam registration is free and worth completing before applying — it unlocks access to several government-backed schemes.

Can a new business get a loan with low turnover?

Harder, but not impossible. Options include PM MUDRA Yojana (Shishu up to ₹50,000, Kishor up to ₹5 lakh, Tarun up to ₹10 lakh), Startup India schemes, or loans assessed primarily on the promoter's personal credit strength. Businesses under two years old typically face the steepest requirements from traditional banks.

Is GST registration mandatory for a business loan?

Not universally, but it substantially widens your options. GST filings give lenders verified turnover data, which is often the single most useful signal they have. Businesses below the GST threshold can still borrow, usually with heavier reliance on bank statements and ITR.

What government schemes exist for MSME loans?

The main ones: CGTMSE for collateral-free guarantee cover, PM MUDRA Yojana for micro-enterprise funding across three tiers, Stand-Up India for SC/ST and women entrepreneurs, and various state-level subsidy schemes. Most require Udyam registration first. These schemes are genuinely underused, largely because most borrowers don't know they exist.

What processing fees and hidden charges should I ask about?

Ask for all of it in writing before signing: processing fee (commonly 0.5% to 4% of the loan amount, often non-refundable even if the loan is later rejected after sanction), documentation charges, GST on fees, prepayment or foreclosure charges, late payment penalties, and any insurance being bundled in. On a ₹10 lakh loan, a 2% processing fee is ₹20,000 — worth knowing before, not after.
