My CIBIL Score Is Low. Does That Mean I Have No Chance of Getting a Loan?

The short answer is no. A low CIBIL score does not automatically mean no loan.

But the longer answer is more important — and most people asking this question need the longer answer, not the short one.

Because a low CIBIL score can come from two very different situations. And the right response to each is completely different. Most articles about low-CIBIL loans skip this distinction entirely — they jump straight to the options list. I'd rather start here.

Two situations that produce a low CIBIL score — and why they're not the same

Situation one: you had a rough patch. A few EMIs slipped during a difficult period — a job change, a medical expense, a month when the money just didn't stretch. The score took a hit. But things have stabilised now. Income is back. The old damage is still showing on the report, but the underlying situation has changed.

Situation two: the score is low because existing debt is already heavy. Multiple EMIs are eating a large portion of the monthly income. The financial pressure hasn't eased — it's ongoing. The low score is a signal of current stress, not past history.

A borrower in situation one may genuinely benefit from a new loan — the score is the residual mark of a period that's passed, and the underlying capacity to repay has returned.

A borrower in situation two needs a different answer entirely. Taking a new loan on top of existing financial strain — especially at the higher interest rates that come with a low CIBIL score — often makes the situation worse, not better.

Before looking at options, the honest first question is: which situation are you actually in?

What a low CIBIL score actually means for a loan application

CIBIL scores run from 300 to 900. Here's what each range practically means when you apply for a personal loan in India in 2026:

750 and above: Most banks are comfortable. Standard rates, reasonable amounts, straightforward approval if other factors are fine.

700 to 749: A caution zone, not a rejection zone. Some banks approve with more documentation, a slightly lower loan amount, or a higher rate. NBFCs are more open here.

650 to 699: Traditional banks become reluctant. NBFCs become the primary route. Rates will be higher — typically 18 to 28 percent per annum versus 11 to 15 percent from banks.

Below 650: Options narrow sharply. Most formal banks decline. Some NBFCs and fintech lenders will consider applications — but the interest rates and conditions reflect the elevated risk they're taking on.

This is the honest picture. It's not hopeless at any score. But it becomes more expensive and more conditional the lower the number goes.

Why NBFCs work differently from banks

A bank answers to its depositors. It's protecting money that belongs to people who trusted it. This makes banks conservative — the CIBIL score is a quick, objective filter that limits their exposure to risk.

An NBFC raises money differently — through its own capital and borrowing — so it can afford to look at a wider range of applicants. NBFCs use a broader set of signals: monthly cash flow in your bank account, consistency of salary credits, utility bill payment history, employer stability, and your overall income pattern.

This is why two borrowers with similar scores can get very different results. A borrower with a CIBIL score of 620 and three years of stable salary income at a reputed employer may get approved by an NBFC. A borrower with a score of 600 and irregular income credits may not — even if the monthly average looks similar. The score still matters. But at the lower end, income stability is what NBFCs weight most.

The realistic options — in the right order

Check your salary account bank first

Before applying anywhere else, check your salary account's app or net banking for pre-approved loan offers. The bank that receives your salary every month has 6 to 12 months of your income data — they already know your repayment capacity better than any credit bureau score. A pre-approved offer from your salary bank often comes at a better rate, with no hard enquiry until you formally accept. This is always the first option to check, regardless of your score.

Gold loan — if gold is available

A gold loan requires no minimum CIBIL score. You pledge gold jewellery and receive up to 75 percent of its current market value. Interest rates in 2026 start at around 7.5 to 8 percent per annum — making it the cheapest credit available in India regardless of credit history. If you have gold and you need a loan, this is almost always the better path financially compared to an unsecured loan at 24 to 36 percent.

NBFC personal loan — the third option, not the first

If the first two options aren't available, NBFCs are the realistic route for most low-CIBIL borrowers. Larger NBFCs like Bajaj Finance, Tata Capital, and InCred have internal credit-scoring models that supplement the bureau score — they look at bank statements, salary slips, ITR, and employer category. Rates start around 18 to 24 percent for the cleaner profiles, going higher for riskier ones.

The honest number to keep in mind: on a ₹2 lakh loan over two years, a borrower at 13 percent pays around ₹28,000 in interest. At 32 percent, that becomes ₹74,000. The low-CIBIL penalty on the same loan is ₹46,000. That's real money — worth knowing before you sign.

A co-applicant with a stronger profile

If a family member or spouse has a significantly better CIBIL score and a clean credit profile, applying jointly can change the lender's risk assessment substantially. The lender evaluates the combined profile — which shifts the decision in your favour. The co-applicant takes on equal legal responsibility for the loan, so this is a conversation that deserves clarity on both sides.

What to be careful about

Avoid applying to multiple lenders at once. Every formal application is a hard enquiry. Multiple hard enquiries in a short period push your score lower — which makes the next lender more cautious, not less.

Avoid unregistered lending apps. Some instant loan apps charge 54 to 120 percent annually when all fees are included. Low-CIBIL borrowers in urgent need are the primary target of predatory platforms. Before borrowing from any app, verify it is registered with the RBI. The RBI publishes a public list of registered NBFCs and lending platforms.

Avoid paid CIBIL repair services. No third party can legally remove accurate negative information from your credit report. If a service promises to clean your score for a fee, they cannot deliver what they're promising. The only legitimate path to score improvement is time and behaviour — not payment.

The question worth sitting with before you apply

One thing I've noticed over the years is that borrowers with low CIBIL scores sometimes need to be asked a question that nobody in the lending industry wants to ask, because the answer sometimes means no loan sold:

Is taking a new loan at a high interest rate actually going to help your situation — or is it going to add one more EMI to a list that's already too long?

If you're in situation one — the rough patch is over, income is stable, you need this loan for a genuine purpose — then yes, the options above are worth pursuing.

If you're in situation two — the existing obligations are already heavy, the score is low because of current stress, not past history — then a high-interest loan may not be the answer. Debt consolidation, renegotiating existing EMIs, or speaking to someone who understands the full picture might be the better starting point.

A low CIBIL score does not mean no chance. But it does mean the decision deserves more thought than an urgent application to the nearest NBFC.
